Why We Walk
Hello everyone, my name is Erica and I have been the captain of Team Debi since it was formed in 2017. My beautiful mother Debi lost her battle to kidney disease in June of 2013.

During her stay in the hospital, the Detroit Zoo was the first place she wanted to go to when she got out and we were determined to bring her there!! She loved the penguins and wanted to visit them again. My father, Mike, even brought little barn animal figurines to her hospital bed to, "bring the zoo to her," as he called it. We are deeply saddened she never got to go to the Zoo again, but every year we make sure to go for her birthday! The Detroit Zoo has and will always be such a special place for my family and the ones who loved her just as much. In our hearts and memories, she will always be at the Zoo. And that brings me to why I am sharing all of this!

On Sunday May 19, 2024, the Detroit Zoo will be holding their annual Kidney Walk. Team Debi will join others throughout the country to fight against kidney disease. We walk not only for my mother, but for colleagues, friends, and strangers who cope with this devastating chronic illness each day - and for others who lost their fight too soon.

Together, we walk to support the lifechanging work of the National Kidney Foundation:

To ensure that families will have a place to turn when they need answers.
To keep up the fight for policy changes to protect kidney patients and living donors.
To drive innovation in transplantation and get more loved ones off the kidney transplant waitlist.
