This year, I walk for two important reasons. First, because I am more HOPEFUL then ever about the future of kidney disease and second, I am CELEBRATING the wins since we last met for Kidney Walk in person.
My profile photo is an old one from March 2019, but I used it because it was taken on our Minnesota Day at the Capitol. We were advocating for the Living Donor Protection Act which eliminates barriers to living donation by guaranteeing living donors can not be discriminated against for receiving life, long-term and disability insurance. Flash forward to May 2022, after dozens of meetings with lawmakers, the power of our collective Orange Army of Kidney Advocates got our bill passed and signed into law! That's real change to me and one of the reasons I'll be celebrating on October 8th with our fierce advocates.
Last but not least, I am all about HOPE this year. Hopeful, because of the innovation in treatment of kidney disease and transplant (some of which is happening here in our backyard in Minnesota). Companies like Medtronic, who is improving quality of life and treatment of dialysis patients and MiroMatrix, who is bioengineering transplantable pig kidneys using human cells to eliminate the need for immunosuppressive medication. Hope is on the horizon!
