Why I Walk

I was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy and end stage kidney disease in June of 2013.  IgA Nephropathy is a rare immune disorder that damaged my kidneys to a dangerous level before I finally had a doctor diagnosis me. After months on dialysis I was luck enough to have a college friend step forward to offer up a kidney and move forward with a transplant.  In 2017 I would need dialysis again.  This time I had a family member in my wife's Aunt who was willing to help out.  We were not a direct match but through a chain we were able to participate to allow her to donate her kidney to a stranger and a stranger donate a kidney to me.  Since then I have been on the up and up

The reason I walk is to share my story and pay it forward. I was lucky enough to have two donors help save my life.  But not everyone is as lucky. I hope to encourage people to become organ donors, especially while living. I also encourage people to have annual physicals with blood work. Had I caught my disease earlier I could have avoided the transplants for a very long time.  If these messages can help anyone in the future then I have succeeded.

Are you with me?
