There are more than 1,000 people waiting for a kidney in Wisconsin, and I'm one of them. Pamela and I moved to Wisconsin more than 40 years ago for my medical residency. We raised three adult children and welcomed six grandchildren.

After more than 30 years as a doctor, you might expect  that I'd to be looking forward to a relaxing retirement. However, progressive kidney disease has other plans. My kidneys are failing and I need a transplant.

As I wait, and look for a living donor,  I'm trying to share me experience as an opportunity to educate others about kidney disease and living kidney donation. I have written articles in the Mequon Beacon, share NKFW resources in waiting rooms, and want to find new ways to spread awareness of this chronic health crisis.

You never know who might come forward as a kidney donor. We just have to keep talking about it and getting the word out. National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin has been a great resource. I'm grateful to know this community is here for kidney patients, like me. Here are three ways you can help:

  1. Join the fight against kidney disease by making a gift to National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin or coming out for the Summer Celebration and Walk on July 26.
  2. Share my story and stories like it! The more we talk about kidney disease and living organ donation, the more lives we can save!
  3. Consider Living Kidney Donation! My center is Aurora St. Luke's and my living donor coordinator is Jeff (ASLMC-LivingDonor@aah.org). Thanks to programs like the National Kidney Registry, you don't have to be a direct match or use the same transplant center as your recipient to save a life (including mine).
